Sofie Dalia Herzog was born in Vienna, Austria on February 4, 1846 to a prominent physician and his wife.  She was a pioneer physician and the first woman to serve as head surgeon for a major American railroad.  Married at the age of 14 to physician Dr. August Herzog, they had 15 children including 3 sets of twins.  Eight of their children died in infancy.  In 1886, August Herzog accepted a position at the US Naval Hospital in New York City.  Sofie began her medial study in New York, returning to Vienna for further study and earning her medical degree from the University of Graz.  Her first office was in Hoboken, New York and practiced successfully there for 9 years.

The Herzogs' youngest daughter, Elfriede Marie, met and married merchant Randolph Prell from Brazoria, Texas.  After visiting Brazoria Sofie chose to move her practice to Texas.  Her unconventional behavior, short hair style and choice of clothing was met with shock by the natives.  However her medical skill and obvious dedication to her patients overcame the prejudice and Sofie became know to the people of Brazoria as simply Dr. Sofie.

Early on in the 1900's the construction of the railroad came through and Dr. Sofie was often called out to tend to the injured and ill men.  She became the chief surgeon and remained a highly valued employee until her resignation a few months before her death.

In addition to her medical practice she operated a drug store where she made many of her own medicines.  The Southern, a local hotel was built by Dr. Sofie and housed many prominent visitors to the area.  It became the center for social activities and remained in use for many years after Sofie's death.  Much of her medical specimen collection was given to John Sealy Hospital in Galveston after her death.

Raised in the Catholic religion, she once quarreled with the local Catholic priest which led her decision to become an Episcopalian.  Dr. Sofie built and furnished an Episcopalian church in Brazoria that remained in use until it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1932.

On August 21, 1913 she married Marion Huntington when he was 70 and she was 67.  After suffering a stroke at the age of 79 Dr. Sofie passed away in a Houston hospital on July 21, 1925.
